Assamo: 4-17 May 2013

Assamo's movements during 4-17 May 2013
Though Assamo hasn't moved very far during this time period, those movements are still interesting... At least to me they are. Assamo spent most of this time near permanent/semi-permanent settlements (when I zoom in on Google Earth there are cement buildings and fenced compounds).  These settlements are located on two arms of a large wadi system, so most of Assamo's locations fall within a circle of about 30 km.  He did make some forays out to the NE (16 May) near Egahlou, to the West (5 May) near Airolaf and even to Tadjoura (6 May).  We have not recorded him re-visiting the site where he was caught.  That could be because locations are determined at intervals throughout the day, and so he could have visited and we missed it.  Of course, it could also be that he just hasn't gone back to the Tadjoura abattoir.

  1. Congratulation for this project.

We visited Djibouti in 2011-2013 to check raptors. A paper is in press in Alauda, a french journal of ornithology.

Djibouti is a nice country for Egyptian vultures and has a strong breeding population.
For example in mountain areas of the Goda massif, mean distance between occupied nests of six neighbouring pairs was 1 km (and the nearest only 400m apart).

Good luck to Assamo (which is also the name of a place with breeding Egyptian vultures !).

    1. Thanks Michel,

I'm looking forward to your paper. Can you send me a copy when it is published, please?

I was only able to spend a few weeks in Djibouti, but I am trying to get back there. Unfortunately, I was only able to see a small part of the country, and I'd like to learn more about the raptors there.

Where is the Assamo you refer to? I know there is one on the Ethiopian border. Assamo actually was near there earlier in the year.

  2. In reference to Michel's comment on there being a place called Assamo... these maps are when Assamo the bird was very close to Assamo the place: http://egyptianvulturedjibouti.blogspot.co.at/2013/04/assamo-kml.html or http://egyptianvulturedjibouti.blogspot.co.at/2013/04/assamo-on-move-again-5-18-april-2013.html
